The Pack
Perils and Peace of Nature - Lake of the Woods
The tranquility was broken. The island was under attack. The ferocity of the storm shook the little cabin and sent majestic pine and spruce plummeting to the ground. The voice of nature grew in volumes - raging winds and tumultuous waves broke their spirit. Nature unleashed violently with infinite power.
The couple and their Alaskan malamute left the urban life behind. Like fools, they jumped from all protections and safeguards. Their new life on the remote Canadian wilderness island was in hope that the journey was worth the risk.
Each season of this true story tests their endurance, their commitment and their relationship – nature’s relentless pounding - impervious fog, dangerous ice conditions, hunted by wolves, lost and separation of the Pack members. They were shut off from the outside world, alone with their antagonist. Nature defies their resilience and threatens the survival of The Pack. Within never-ending perils, they must somehow find peace.

The Pack
I absolutely loved this book. Kept me on the edge of my seat, I didn't want to put it down. Born & raised on Lake of the Woods I could appreciate their courage to live on an island year round with all the perils that were thrown at them & expressed in The Pack. What an adventure. Can't wait for the next book to come out! Amazon.ca Review

Read it because it's worth reading

The Pack is the true experiences of two lives (and a Malamute) lived outside of the standard mundane framework of the general populace. The story shows the joys and hazards of living with all of nature's vagaries and learning about much more than survival. I read the book in one long stretch of hours. I could not put it down. Read it! Amazon.ca Review

Must Read
The only thing I didn't like about this amazing book is that it ended. I immediately wanted to keep reading. I am so hoping that there will be a sequel! The incredible descriptions of Lake of the Woods made me feel like I was seeing it and immediately made me want to travel there. The best way I could describe it is as an easier and more practical Walden that often reads like a cliff hanger with other chapters that are as soothing and melodic as a mountain stream. Each chapter stands on its own with perfect pacing and when placed together create a wonderful quilt of generosity, experience, growth and beauty. Truly an amazing book! Amazon.com Review

Great story about a couple setting up wilderness outpost on a Canadian Lake
Connie is a great story teller. I have spent about 50 summers on Lake of the Woods on Whitefish Bay just south of Connie and Jim's island. The descriptions of the life on the lake are vividly accurate, though I have never had to meet the challenges of the winters here. She really lets us into her heart, lets us know who she really is, weaknesses, strengths, all of it. Life on the lake really is determined by the weather as she says...if its windy, you may not want to battle the 'rollers' as she calls the waves. When the nights are clear, the stars and Milky Way are spectacular, as are the northern lights. And there are constant challenges...if your boat doesn't work, well you are stranded! If you have ever spent time 'Up North' in the pines of the Boreal Forest or the Canadian Shield, you would probably love this book. Amazon.com Review
